Zamami Island Thanksgiving 2021

S/V Knotty Girl arrives to Zamami Island.


ABOARD S/V KNOTTY GIRL (11/25/2021) -- Spent Thanksgiving 2021 at Zamami Island in the Keramas this year.

Journey started off at 7 a.m. and we could not get the genoa to unfurl after we raised sails in Ginowan Marina before heading out. There was lots of pumice floating in the ocean outside of the marina and we even shut off engines to clear through one big patch. 

There was hardly any wind at all during the trip and we motorsailed the entire way.

The Knotty Girl Crew for this trip was: Dan, Alisa, Shinobu-san, Nanse and me.

At the quay at Zamami while attempting to fix the genoa, I met in person someone from the Facebook group "Sailing in Japan." This is not a first, as I've actually met several people from the site in person. Alan was kind enough to shoot this photo of me from the ferry as he departed after a day trip, hiking in the Keramas. Thanks Alan.


As the photo shows, we were finally able to fix the furler. Problem was the bearings need greasing. Thanks crew member Dan for helping me.

I have a couple of fold-able bikes we bring on each trip and we got those out but to our surprise we couldn't find the bike pump. I had checked the only gas station before for an airpump but there was none visible. Nanase -- a resident of Zamami -- was able to get the tires inflated. So Dan and I shot off to a local beach which is great for sunsets.

Along the way we stopped at a statue of a dog that is kinda famous. There's even a Japanese movie that was made about the dog. Apparently the dog used to swim to the adjacent island to meet their “girlfriend” or “boyfriend” from Zamami Island to Aka Island. Not sure how long the statue has been up but it’s a cool place to get a photo on the way to the beach.

The sunsets are pretty epic at this location and when it’s good, it looks really cool. Thanks to Dan for shooting some island scenes as we took a little time off from boat maintenance to enjoy the island. Can’t say how much I absolutely love going to Zamamai. I’m not sure if its just the island vibe or what but the place is one of my favorite places on earth.

EAST CHINA SEA (April 13, 2021) — YouTubers — S/V Shinki Itten — joined the crew of S/V Knotty Girl for a two-hour sunset cruise. Captain Vincent of S/V Taihei also joined for the trip. The Shinki Itten crew — James and Ayano — is visiting Okinawa for the first time so Capt. J wanted to make the trip up the coast fun with a few extra hands. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. This was also Capt. Vincent’s first sail aboard S/V Knotty Girl, a 1996 Okazaki-made 34-foot cruiser.

DJ Skeezy and fam

ABOARD S/V KNOTTY GIRL (APRIL 9, 2022) -- DJ Skeezy and DJ Em returned to Okinawa recently for a family vacation and finally got the chance to take a sunset cruise aboard my boat. They brought their two-year-old son along and crew member Dan also joined us for the ride.  I originally met DJ Skeezy when I was playing gigs on ukulele at the old Pour House adjacent to Alaha Park. He moved off of Okinawa a few years ago but we've remained friends on Facebook. So, when he returned I wanted to show he what's he's been missing in Okinawa. Afterward we had a party on the boat and got to view a nearly perfect sunset.
